FAQs
What are “Complete Streets”?
Complete Streets make sure everyone has safe, reliable, and convenient transportation options. No matter your age, ability, income, or where you live - you can get around in safety and comfort.
Why do we have a Complete Streets Policy?
LFUCG has a Complete Streets Policy to ensure that we plan, design, build, and maintain our streets so they work well however you choose to get around. It means we prioritize safety and comfort for all modes of transportation, not just cars.
How will the Complete Streets Design Manual affect our community?
The requirements described in the manual will apply to all new street construction and city-led improvement projects across Lexington. The manual also helps advance LFUCG’s overarching Vision Zero Policy. "Vision Zero” is a broad but straightforward commitment that Lexington has made to reach the goal of zero deaths and serious injuries on our roadways.
What are the intended outcomes of the Complete Streets Design Manual?
Because Complete Streets is both a process and a final product, the manual guides design and construction. The following outcomes are priorities for the manual:
Streets should be safe, accessible, livable, sustainable, maintainable, and transparent.
What do you mean by those terms (i.e. "safe, accessible, etc.") ?
Streets should be SAFE
Street design reduces the likelihood of severe crashes and conflicts for all modes of getting around.
Streets should be ACCESSIBLE
Everyone in our community can get around whatever their age, ability, or income.
Streets should be LIVABLE
As our biggest public asset, streets are spaces for connection and activity.
Streets should be SUSTAINABLE
Roadways make walking, biking or taking the bus an appealing way to get around AND streets are built with materials that help tackle environmental challenges like air quality and stormwater runoff.
Streets should be MAINTAINABLE
Long-term functionality and durability affect the quality of our streets.
Streets should be TRANSPARENT
Street design decisions are rooted in Complete Streets Policy and community goals. All partners are at the table and choices are well documented.
